ATL began in 1925 when the City of Atlanta leased 287 acres of an abandoned automobile racetrack and developed it into an airfield called Candler Field. The airport later became Atlanta Municipal Airport. Its present name honors former Atlanta mayors William B. Hartsfield and Maynard H. Jackson, whose leadership helped expand the airport.

How Early Should You Arrive at Atlanta Airport?

The airport identifies approximately 5–9 a.m. as one of its busiest daily security periods. Holidays, long weekends and major Atlanta events may require even more time. Travelers using off-airport ATL parking should also include time to park, unload luggage, ride the shuttle, check bags and reach the security checkpoint.

Understanding Atlanta Airport’s Terminals and Concourses
One of the most common sources of confusion at ATL is the difference between its two terminals and seven concourses.
Domestic Terminal
The Domestic Terminal is divided into:
Domestic North
Domestic South
Domestic North and South refer primarily to airline ticket counters, check-in areas and baggage claim—not separate groups of gates.
Delta generally uses the Domestic South side, while many other domestic airlines check in on the North side. Airline assignments can change, so confirm where your operating airline is located before arriving.
After passing through security, passengers can use the Plane Train or pedestrian walkway to reach any concourse.
Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal
The International Terminal is located at:

It has its own roadway entrance and is separate from the Domestic Terminal. Travelers departing the United States are generally instructed to check in at the International Terminal, although airline-specific procedures may differ.
International flights may use Concourse E or F. However, an international destination does not automatically guarantee that check-in or departure will use one specific concourse. Confirm the terminal and gate with your airline.
Concourse T
Concourse T is closest to the Domestic Terminal and can often be reached without riding the Plane Train.

Concourse B
Concourse B primarily serves Delta flights and includes a Delta Sky Club, Minute Suites, restaurants, shops and passenger services.
Paschal’s Southern Cuisine is one of the most recognizable Atlanta dining options in this concourse.
Concourse C
Concourse C serves Delta and several other airlines. It includes a large centerpoint dining area, coffee shops, quick-service restaurants and a Delta Sky Club.
Dining choices include LongHorn Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, The Varsity and Sweet Georgia Juke Joint.
Concourse D
Concourse D serves multiple airlines and has upper and lower gate areas. Allow extra time to locate your gate because some sections require escalators or elevators.
It includes restaurants such as Chicken + Beer, Grindhouse Killer Burgers, Mustard Seed BBQ and Atlanta Braves All-Star Grill. It is also home to ATL’s newest Delta Sky Club, which opened at D Centerpoint in 2025.
Concourse E
Concourse E serves domestic and international flights and provides access to U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities for certain international arrivals.

Connecting Between Concourses at ATL
The Plane Train
The Plane Train is ATL’s underground automated people mover. It operates 24 hours a day and connects the Domestic Terminal with Concourses T, A, B, C, D, E and F.
Trains arrive frequently, but the stations and cars may be crowded during peak periods.
Pedestrian Walkway
Passengers can also walk between concourses through the Transportation Mall. The entire route includes airport art installations and exhibits.
Walking can be useful when:
You have a long layover
The train is crowded
You want to exercise between flights
You have time to explore the airport artwork
The distance from one end of ATL to the other is significant. Use the Plane Train when you have a short connection or are traveling with children, heavy luggage, or limited mobility.

Check your new gate before leaving your arriving concourse.
Follow signs for the Plane Train rather than exiting to baggage claim.
Do not leave the secure area unless necessary.
Allow more time when connecting to or from an international arrival.

International Arrivals and Connections
Passengers arriving from another country without U.S. preclearance must generally:
Proceed through immigration.
Collect checked luggage.
Clear customs.

Follow signs to the Plane Train or pedestrian walkway.
Continue to the departure concourse.
Atlanta-bound international passengers leave through the International Terminal Arrivals Hall. Connecting passengers are directed toward baggage-recheck counters and onward concourse transportation.
Travel tip: Keep medication, travel documents, chargers and at least one change of clothing in your carry-on. International connections can be affected by immigration lines, luggage delivery, customs and gate changes.

How PreFlight ATL Parking Works
Make a reservation online or through the PreFlight app.
Set the reservation time for when you expect to reach the parking lot.
Scan your reservation barcode at the entrance.
Follow signs to the parking type selected on your reservation.
Scan again if entering the covered parking section.
Park in the designated active row or international section.
Wait beside your vehicle with your luggage.
The shuttle driver will pick you up directly from your vehicle.
Keep the red locator slip provided by the driver.
After your trip, use the locator slip, website or app for return instructions and real-time tracking.
The shuttle will return you directly to your vehicle.

The estimates update frequently, but conditions can change while you are traveling to the airport. Check the security page before leaving home and again after arriving at PreFlight.
Checkpoint schedules and lane availability may change based on passenger volume, construction and TSA staffing. Do not rely solely on an older list of posted operating hours.
Choosing a checkpoint
In the Domestic Terminal, passengers may be directed to a checkpoint that is different from the side where their airline’s check-in counter is located. Once through security, every concourse can be reached by the Plane Train.
The Domestic South checkpoint is currently designated for TSA PreCheck. Travelers without PreCheck should follow signage to one of the general-screening checkpoints.

Delta Sky Clubs
Delta operates eight Sky Clubs across ATL, including locations in Concourses T, A, B, C, D, E and F. The newest location opened at Concourse D Centerpoint in 2025.
Access depends on qualifying membership, ticket type, airline status or eligible credit-card benefits. Delta’s lounge-access rules have changed in recent years, so review current eligibility before traveling.

Things to Do During an ATL Layover
For a shorter layover:
Try a local Atlanta restaurant.
Explore airport artwork.
Walk between nearby concourses.
Visit an eligible lounge.

For a longer connection:
Explore multiple concourses using the Plane Train.
Walk through the Transportation Mall art exhibits.
Have a sit-down meal at One Flew South, Paschal’s or Chicken + Beer.
Visit the Centurion Lounge, Delta Sky Club or another eligible lounge.
Use a chapel or quiet space.
Leaving the airport is usually practical only when you have a substantial layover and have accounted for MARTA or driving time, security screening and boarding.

Contact the airline directly.
Lost in a terminal, concourse or TSA checkpoint
Items found in public terminal areas and at passenger-security checkpoints are delivered to ATL Lost and Found.

Current posted hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., excluding weekends and holidays.
